INSITER is an EU research project concerned with developing intuitive self-inspection and self-instruction techniques to assist staff working on construction and production sites by way of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Augmented Reality (AR). These tools will be applied in the construction, refurbishment and maintenance of energy-efficient buildings made of prefabricated components.

The project is aimed at improving quality and preventing construction errors in prefabrication and installation, so as to close any gaps in energy performance between the design and realization of energy-efficient buildings. The project is concerned with developing both methodological approaches and the hard- and software required. Buildings and their energy performance will be evaluated on site by way of laser scans, sensors and digital forms on Tablets. Onsite energy efficiency key performance indicators and detailed instructions for construction and maintenance will then be displayed in a 3D model and overlaid with real-time camera images. As the project progresses, development results will be assessed in actual construction projects to evaluate their usability in practice.

Beside HOCHTIEF ViCon also Dragados as well as the German Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation participate in the consortium of 14 partners. The project was launched in December 2014 and will be composed of seven work packages over the next four years. The EU supports the project within the frame of the program "Horizon 2020". ViCon will be in charge of work package 4, "BIM", which provides the 3D model and the infrastructure for connecting all relevant data to support the methods and on-site construction tools being developed. Once again ViCon underlines its great commitment to R & D (research & development) and presents itself as a leading industry partners for international research projects.
