In a two-part series, we provide insights into the Mühlberg Tunnel pilot project, in which we successfully digitized construction site processes together with our colleagues from HOCHTIEF Infrastructure's Southwest branch in Frankfurt. In this second part, we present the data evaluation, the resulting added value and our success factors.

For a project description, take a look at the first part here: https://www.hochtief-vicon.com/vicon_en/News/Items/From-data-to-knowledge-together-with-digital-construction-site-processes---data-acquisition-in-the-Muehlbergtunnel-11_150.jhtml

The aim of digitizing construction site processes is to improve the costs, quality and time of processes on site. In the first step, this can mean a different effort when recording data, which then pays off in the use of the evaluated data.

An example of this in this project is the billing process for safety equipment. These were recorded digitally for each tunnel section, which then considerably accelerated the subsequent billing process. In addition to optimizing the time required, a significant improvement in quality can also be observed.

Previously, this data was recorded manually on paper and then evaluated in a time-consuming process. The digital recording now enables more detailed evaluations according to the actual advance class distribution in the distance-time diagram.

The development of digitized tunnelling documentation as part of quality assurance was a market first in this form and was therefore used for the first time in this project. In the course of the project, the tunnelling documentation was further developed so that it is now used as standard as part of quality assurance for tunnel projects.

In addition to the invoicing process, the generation of daily construction reports was also digitized, for example. Not only were the individual daily construction reports created digitally, but they were also linked to the corresponding work processes from the schedule. Such a link supports the understanding of the actual construction process and helps with regular construction progress monitoring.

Two key success factors can be identified in this project. Firstly, it is crucial that the implemented digital systems can be flexibly adapted. The background to this is that every construction project is different and there are always changes that need to be incorporated during an individual project. We therefore align the digital system with the processes!

Good cooperation is also crucial, in this case between HOCHTIEF Infrastructure and us. Close contact and regular exchanges help with system implementation and adjustments.

We would like to thank the entire project team for the successful collaboration and look forward to further joint projects!
