Everyone talks about BIM; there are many questions, even more answers, no unified standards, unclear public mandates, and if it comes to introducing BIM on an actual project many stakeholders are confronted with the same challenging question: Where do we start?
The answer is BIM Implementation. An important tool thereby is the BIM Implementation Plan. It informs all stakeholders about BIM utilization and processes as well as the responsibilities. Based on our experience introducing BIM in various International projects, we defined seven categories which designate a feasible BIM Implementation Plan:
1. Project analysis
2. Definition of goals and applications
3. Allocation of responsibilities and resources
4. Definition of required training levels
5. Specification of BIM processes
6. Timeline for BIM Implementation Plan
7. Installation of BIM within the project
Only after defining these components a project will be able to start and utilize BIM successfully. A BIM Implementation Plan is considered to be a stepping stone for a project as BIM management strategy, BIM protocols, BIM standards and specifications are created based on its principles.
