We are happy to announce our cooperation with University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld and Pape Architects in the new research project “Building Information Modeling in existing buildings (BIMiB load-bearing system)”.

Aim of the project is to develop a system which utilizes machine learning and knowledge modeling methods to automatically recognize important structural features of existing builds and thus create added value with BIM for operation, renovation or demolition measures in existing buildings.

“If BIM is used consistently, it for example supports investment decisions and helps to avoid errors during construction”, Prof. Dr. Dominic Becking from Campus Minden of University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld explained. “Unfortunately it is almost solely used for new builds, therefore it is our goal, to make the application of it to existing constructions more attractive.” (Source: https://www.innovations-report.de/html/berichte/architektur-bauwesen/kuenstliche-intelligenz-im-bauwesen.html)

Since Machine Learning is not very common in combination with capturing structural systems, pioneering work is done with this project, which is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. An answer to how and under which circumstances machine learning can be useful for the detection of structures in existing buildings is to be worked out in this cooperation.
