For the fifth time since 2012 HOCHTIEF ViCon Qatar organized the most anticipated BIM event of the year: the 5th Qatar BIM User Day on November 5, 2015 in collaboration with Qatar University’s College of Engineering and Teesside University (UK). Fifteen speakers presented local and international expertise in the four core areas of BIM: process, people, technology and policy.
The unique format attracted 263 delegates, from 16 countries including the MENA region, USA, Europe and China. It was the highest number of participants so far spanning from students to CEOs, from young professionals to long-time experts all engaging in diverse presentations, networking opportunities and knowledge exchange.
According to the popular tradition of the previous four events the introduction was delivered by a student from Qatar University, who introduced the audience to BIM from her own perspective and experience. The following process section featured turnkey solution outlines for BIM management process planning, safer buildings and practical examples from Qatar’s Mega Projects, like the world cup stadiums, Doha Metro and Lusail City.
The people section illuminated BIM key roles, stakeholder interests and training developments and trainings in the region. Interoperability issues, product lifecycle management and live modeling using cloud computing were covered in the technology section, where delegates were also able to participate in a live augmented reality demonstration with their own mobile devices. The conference day was completed by the current state of local adoption of global standards and the latest results of the “Qatar-BIM Project“ within the policy section.
The BIM User Days focus on the entire project lifecycle and address all stakeholders and all phases of a building from design over construction to operation. The ambitious aim of this unique non-profit event is to establish a knowledge platform with government, academic, research and industry experts; positioning Qatar as a thought leader in BIM education and knowledge in the Middle East, maintaining Qatar’s BIM network for students and professionals and providing an overview of Qatar’s market BIM maturity status.
“The BIM User Day is for the Qatari market and focuses on local speakers and case studies”, emphasized René Schumann, HOCHTIEF ViCon’ International Operations Director in his closing speech. “This event links the academic sector with the industry; the industry setting requirements and the universities implementing suitable initiatives. What I’d like to see in the near future are clear standards for Qatar and bench marks for BIM Managers to channel the industry’s expectations on BIM.” Mr. Schumann stressed his great appreciation and gratefulness for the support of all involved parties finishing his speech with an invitation to BIM User Day number six.
